The
Village
The
Borgo – old quarter
Built against
a rising hillside, this is authentic Italy, where little streets
and alleyways lead to private squares and across bridged pathways
in what is an enchanting patchwork of tightly packed, vividly coloured
houses.
Pass through
the little arch that forms the lower approach to
Calitri’s
historic quarter and you come upon an authentic little jewel of
rural Italy, where local corner shops, cosy little restaurants and
even a lovely Palazzo (palace) lay hidden among the homes.
This is a place
where artists’ studios and galleries mix with washing hanging
out to dry. At night, the stylish, sophisticated wine bar comes
alive with ambient music, local snacks and stunning views from its
panoramic lounge terrace.
Calitri
– New Town
In contrast
with many pretty country villages Calitri is not a ghostly hamlet,
but a lively rural village of several thousand souls where life
follows a gentle pace dictated by the seasons. A perfect place to
relax and recoup from a busy lifestyle, it offers an authenticity
and focus on the simple yet good things in life that is refreshingly
far removed from the noisy, spoiled places we these days call tourist
resorts.
Calitri is a
real Italian country village where you’ll enjoy good Italian
food based on fresh local produce, rather than places selling English
breakfasts or curries. Not jaded by mass tourism, the local people
will invite you with sincerity to share their quaint little restaurants,
cafés, bars and pastry shops.
Among the shops
you’ll find all amenities, including an Internet café
and several banks, but also delicious, fresh ice cream, wonderful
pizza, local grocery stores (and a weekly market) full of the region’s
delightful produce, and restaurants where the fayre is as good as
it is reasonable in price. Little bars provide a night time venue,
while there are also hotels with swimming pools, not to mention
a host of local festivities, hiking and sports activities in the
area. Above all, Calitri is a great base from which to explore the
region’s many sights and experiences.
